Basshar al-assad and his wife arrive at India

Bashar al-assad and his wife Azmi arrived here in India yesterday, greeted by prez Pratibha Patil and PM Manmohan Singh.
Dr. Bashar al-assad is the Syrian president and the son of the former president Hafez al-assad.
Until he became President, Bashar al-Assad was not greatly involved in Syrian politics; his only political role was as head of the Syrian Computer Society, which was mainly in charge of introducing the Internet to Syria in 2001. he was brought to power by an unopposed referendum in 2001.

India and Syria on wednesday decided to strengthen their ties in hydrocarbon and other sectors as they signed three pacts, including one on avoidance of double taxation.

Dr Bashar al-assad was on his first visit here and invited indian investors to make use of the numerous oppurtunities in Syria.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Al-Assad held wide-ranging talkson various matters.

For someone who is not averse to technology, Mr.Assad is surprisingly archaic in his geo-political views. I say this even if he has successfully ruled Syria for ages.

I totally disagree with Thiru. The middle east is a difficult region and Mr.Assad has to take into account very divergent views from religious sub-groups and conflicting tribal outlooks.
